The opening ceremony for the Sochi Winter Olympics tonight, will include a musical appearance by t.a.T.u., a Russian pop duo known for their lesbian image, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The choice is surprising considering Russia’s anti-gay propaganda laws. Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova, the two members of t.a.T.u., are famously known for their early 2000’s song “All The Things She Said,” and the music video (WATCH IT HERE!) that includes the two of them kissing. Despite their gay image, neither of them is actually gay.
“In Russia the situation with the LGBT is still really tough. I think we changed this a little bit,” said Katina, in an interview with the Daily Beast last year.
The Russian Olympic team will enter to the duo’s song “Not Gonna Get Us.”
Be sure to tune in tonight for the opening ceremony of what is proving to be one of the most controversial Olympics in a very long time!
