At the Emmys this past Sunday, Tracy Morgan made his first big public appearance since the accident that nearly took his life last year. While his appearance came as a surprise to viewers across the country, it was also a wonderful surprise to Morgan's long-time friend, Tina Fey.
According to EW, Fey was backstage when she was informed that Morgan would like to say hello. "We both got very emotional," said Fey. She expressed how glad she was that Morgan was not only to go out and speak, but to even crack a joke. "He's really been through something terrible," she said. "For him to have survived this is nothing short of a miracle."
According to executive producer Don Mischer, the surprise appearance at the Emmys had been planned months in advance, and Morgan, "loved the idea of surprising everyone." They even used code names in reference to Morgan to not spoil the surprise.
"Last year, Jimmy Kimmel stood on this stage and said, ‘We’ll see you back here next year, Tracy Morgan,'" Morgan said on stage. "Well, Jimmy, thanks to my amazing doctors and the support of my family and my beautiful new wife, I’m here. … Only recently I’ve started to feel like myself again. Which means a whole lot of women are gonna get pregnant at the afterparty.”
Tracy Morgan will be returning to television to host Saturday Night Live for his second time on October 17th.
