The popular phone app Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector, produced by Hit-Point, has gained a lot of attention since its debut in 2014. The game takes place in the player’s backyard and porch, where they set out food to attract a variety of cats. The player can purchase toys and better food to coax in more cats, and some cats are even wearing costumes. With soothing music and cute cats playing, it is a much more casual and relaxing game than most mobile games. The app has been downloaded over 19 million times worldwide.
In November 2016, AMG Entertainment announced that it was producing a movie based on the hit game. The title is Neko Atsume no Ie, or Neko Atsume’s Home. AMG recently released a thirty-second trailer for the movie, seen below.
The story is about a novelist named Sakumoto, who has a bad case of writer’s block despite winning many awards as a debut author. In an attempt to get out of his slump, he moves to the countryside, but it does little to inspire him. One day, he looks into his garden and sees a stray cat. When he fails to coax it to come closer, he becomes incredibly disappointed. He decides to leave some cat food in the corner of his garden overnight, and the next day, the food has vanished.
The trailer shows Sakumoto’s ennui but does not shy away from showing a lot of cats. Cats can be seen lined up eating food, hanging out on the roof, lounging in hammocks, and even cuddling up against Sakumoto’s leg. One of the last shots of the trailer shows Sakumoto relaxing in his house, watching six cats play with a variety of toys -- every cat lover’s dream. Fans of the game want to see as many cats as possible, and the trailer absolutely delivers. Hopefully, the movie will be filled with lots and lots of cats and convey the same charm as the game.
Neko Atsume’s Home is set to come out in Japan on April 8, 2017. So far it is slated for a Japan-only release, but the game’s popularity might convince distributors to release it internationally.
