Troye Sivan teams up with Alessia Cara to build a network of chosen family in their spring-flavored “Wild” music video…

Welcome back to the Blue Neighbourhood. Earlier this month Troye Sivan teamed up with “Wild Things” songstress Alessia Cara to record a reimagined take on his Blue Neighbourhood lead single “Wild.” The new version of the song remains true to the original story of young lovers and their uninhibited adventures with the addition of a verse from Alessia Cara and some heartfelt harmonies. “We’re alike you and I / two blue hearts locked in our wrong minds” Cara croons on the track before joining Troye on the sweet chorus.

“You make my heart shake, bend, and break / but I can’t turn away / and it’s driving me wild” they harmonize on the bridge. Cara’s addition breathes new life into the track, and the euphoric anthem shows signs of becoming a perfect addition to playlists as we move into the warmest days of summer.

Now the twosome have teamed up to provide a new visual to match the revamped single. Last year the single received a video treatment as the first chapter of his three-part Blue Neighbourhood Saga. The saga unveiled a story of young love, as two best friends become lovers and struggle to come to grasp with their sexuality in a world that is not always the most accepting. The touching visual is filled with drama and true emotion as Troye attempts to save his beloved from his own demons. 

The new visual unpacks some of the heartbreak of the original saga, instead opting to breathe a sense of hope into the lyrics.

In a trailer released earlier this week, Sivan recited a poem written by LGBT activist Elena Senechal-Baker about how youths create their own sense of family and belonging amongst one another. “We find each other in the margins we create, under streetlights and on the street corners. The spaces we form together become sacred and safe” he intoned over “Wild’s” striding production. “When we hold hands and we kiss and we dance, this is our chosen family.”

The new visual is comprised largely of home video footage, showcasing the less than perfect yet incredibly poignant footage that families record of one another simply being together. Troye, Alessia, and their friends enjoy a gorgeous spring day in the simple video, which focuses more on their relationships and their time together than unravelling a story. True to Troye’s aesthetic the video is a rainbow of dreamy pastels and youthful community.

The duo’s reworking of “Wild” breathes new life into the track. As Troye turns his attention away from current single “Youth” (which netted him his first top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100), it’s nice to imagine that “Wild” could become the sleeper hit it deserves to be.
