TV Personality Dr. Drew Discusses Secret Cancer Battle

Staff Writer

Drew Pinsky, commonly known as “Dr. Drew,” recently went public about his almost 2-year long battle with prostate cancer. The 55-year-old TV personality and addiction specialist told People he initially felt “sick here and there” in 2011, and got a check-up after his wife urged him. There, he was diagnosed with an inflamed prostate, and a subsequent biopsy revealed a low-grade tumour. “Lo and behold, I have cancer, he said.” I was doing Lifechangers and my HLN show was going. My wife and I had this great relationship, very active sexually. This could screw everything up. It was a terrible feeling." Pinsky admits that he was very reluctant to visit the doctor for a check-up. “I am a doctor!” He had said to his wife. Well, the doctor became the patient. Pinsky underwent a radical robotic prostatectomy in early July 2013. He returned to work 10 days after the surgery. "I'm cancer-free," he continued. “I’m grateful this was a detectable, survivable cancer. I’m pleased that the judgment and intuition of my physicians were spot-on every step of the way. And I’m glad my wife’s internal radar was working well.” Pinsky discussed his battle with cancer in an article he posted on the website of the HLN network. He explains that he wants his fans, and others alike, to hear his story in his words. “And I want to make you aware. Men…are likely to get prostate cancer...don’t freak out. In many cases, time is on your side,” he said. Pinsky seems to be using his experience to lend out a supportive hand to men who are fighting the same battle. We find it admirable that Pinsky is transparent enough with his fans to share such a  personal story just to make them more comfortable in what is sure to be a difficult time.
