If my Twitter timeline is to be believed, the “twerk” is more than just the new Gangnam Style, Harlem Shake, or even the Macarena. Twerking is not just a dance move, it’s a way of life; a statement of freedom, nonconformity and rebellion. It’s a gaggle of girlfriends shaking some booty to the camera instead of doing their homework. It’s Miley Cyrus in a onesie, in fact it’s just Miley Cyrus in general these days.
With her increasingly risqué behaviour of late, culminating in new music video We Can’t Stop, it’s hard to remember a time when Miley Cyrus and twerking weren’t synonymous. So much so that Jay Z has immortalized the questionably glorious image in a new song.
Taken from the new album ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’, released worldwide on July 9; the rapper philosophizes on the former Hannah Montana star’s fondness for twerking on Somewhereinamerica.
“When I was talking Instagram/ Last thing you wanted was your picture snapped/ Feds still lurking/ They see I’m still putting work in/ Cause somewhereinamerica/ Miley Cyrus is still twerkin’,”
“Twerk, twerk, twerk, twerk/ Twerk, Miley, Miley, twerk/ Twerk, Twerk, Miley, Miley, Miley, twerk/ Twerk, yeah, ugh-huh/ Twerk, Miley, Miley, Miley/ Only in America.”
It’s not the first time a lyrical connection has been made between Miley and Jay Z. In 2009 track Party in the USA Miley gives a shout out to Jay Z, singing:
“My tummy’s turnin’ and I’m feelin’ kinda home sick/ Too much pressure and I’m nervous,/ That’s when the taxi man turned on the radio/ And a Jay-Z song was on.”
Looks like Jay Z is returning the favour! Keep twerking Miley, you’re a cultural phenomenon.
