Universal have confirmed the release of two new films for 2017: a third instalment of the Despicable Me franchise and an animated version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Both films are to be produced by Illumination Entertainment.
The Grinch is the latest Dr Seuss animated adaptation and is expected to remain similar in style to the 2012 hit The Lorax. The animated film will be released 17 years after the Jim Carrey live version, which albeit financially successful, was not critically well received.
Perhaps animation is better suited to Dr Seuss’ stories. Let’s hope so, as following the release of The Grinch, the animated version of The Cat in the Hat is set to hit cinemas. It likewise had a live action version in 2003 that was criticised heavily, though this time for not remaining true to the original stories.
Following the huge success of Despicable Me 2, which has earned $935 million at the box office since its release last year, a third outing is planned. The original film, Despicable Me, was released back in 2010 and a spin-off, Minions, that is currently in production, is set to be released in summer next year, making the total number of films in the franchise up to four. Both will be produced by Illumination Entertainment, though no plot details are known for Despicable Me 3, nor have any cast members (including Steve Carell, who voices Gru) confirmed their involvement in it. The film is due to premiere on June 30, 2017.
Finally, Universal have announced a third, as-yet untitled project that Illumination Entertainment will produce, slated for a December 21, 2016 release. Not much is known about it at the time, though the companies have said that it will be “about courage, competition and carrying a tune”, with plenty of music and directed, and written, by Garth Jennings.
So dates for the diary: Untitled “courage” project premieres December 21, 2016, Despicable Me 3 will be released June 30, 2017, The Grinch will be in cinemas November 17, 2017.
