In the grand tradition of crowd-funding to create art, a new batch of alumni from the University of Michigan is campaigning to raise funds to produce a revival of Becket in New York City this summer.  You may recognize some of the people in this cast, including Yuri Sardarov (Chicago Fire) and Arielle Goldman (Team Starkid). For those who are unfamiliar, Becket tells the story of the relationship between King Henry II and Thomas Becket. From their website: "The idea to stage Becket has been floating around between us for a while, but it wasn't until we began researching the production history that the project began to pick up steam. The play premiered on Broadway in 1960. With Anthony Quinn as Henry and Laurence Olivier as Becket, it took home four Tony Awards including Best Play. In 1964, it was adapted into a highly successful, Academy Award winning film starring Peter O’Toole and Richard Burton. Despite both critical and commercial popularity, the play has rarely been produced in the United States, with the last major revival taking place in 1997 at the Olney Theatre in Baltimore. This means that by some cosmic oversight or fatal blessing we have been presented with a chance most theatre professionals never get: the opportunity to reintroduce a modern classic on our own terms—reminding people of the play's beauty while simultaneously dusting off its cobwebs and refreshing it for contemporary sensibilities. Using an ensemble of 8 actors, we plan to revitalize, re-imagine, retune and enhance Becket for the New York Stage." What theater enthusiast isn’t interested in new visions of classic tales?  Pomme Koch as King Henry II and Yuri Sardarov as Becket are sure to be fantastic.
