WandaVision Episode Six: Recap & Review

Things are heating up in the town of Westview and its bigger and better than ever

Friday has now become Marvel fan’s favourite day. WandaVision has become a staple in households all across the world. We are more than half way through the series and there are spoilers if you have not seen the series so far.

Episode Six:

The episode opens with a Malcolm in the Middle style title sequence, bringing us into the 90s. Billy ascends down the stairs, where he and Tommy are making breakfast and breaking the fourth wall. Pietro is snoring on the couch and uses his speed to scare the boys. Wanda comes downstairs wondering what all the noise is wearing her Halloween costume. Pietro and Wanda share what seems to be an old childhood memory but she doesn’t seem to remember it. Billy looks to camera and says his mother has been acting strange, since the arrival of her brother. Vision then ascends the stairs in his Halloween costume. He says he has to leave as he is on neighbourhood watch duty tonight.

Billy says that his mother and father have been “different” lately. Pietro says he can go out trick or treating with Wanda and the boys. Vision kisses Wanda on the cheek and leaves. Wanda informs Pietro he doesn’t have a costume to go trick or treating in. Tommy and his uncle use super speed to come back in matching costumes.

Back at the S.W.O.R.D Response Base, Monica and Director Hayward are arguing about sending the drone in, following the events of Episode Five. Director Hayward comes up with a plan to kill Wanda. Monica advises him that if Wanda is the problem, she has to be the solution. Director Hayward has Darcy, Jimmy and Monica removed from the Response Base. As they are being escorted away, Jimmy and Monica fight the S.W.O.R.D agents. They place the unconscious agents in a storage unit, wearing their uniforms and badges and make their way back inside.

Back in Westview, Wanda, Pietro and the twins are enjoying the festivities. Wanda begins to test Pietro and asks why he looks different. He doesn’t seem to know the answer. As Wanda is talking to Herb, the twins and their uncle are pulling Halloween pranks at super speed. Wanda suggests to Herb, that Vision could help with the neighbourhood watch however Herb says that Vision isn’t on duty tonight. In the next scene, Vision is walking down a suburban street and sees a woman hanging up her Halloween decorations. The woman is stuck in some sort of loop and a tear rolls down her cheek.

Pietro and Wanda begin to have a spat and he says he is just “playing his part”. Wanda is testing Pietro further, Tommy discovers his powers of super speed and takes his brother to a different part of town to go trick or treating. Outside Westview, Jimmy, Darcy and Monica sneak into part of the Response Base. Darcy pulls out her laptop to hack into Director Hayward’s devices. She discovers Director Hayward found a way to look through the boundary and he is tracking Vision.

Back in Westview, Vision is walking through a part of town but no one seems to be moving. He flies over Westview and sees a car with its lights on. Vision ascends to the ground and sees that Agnes is driving the car. Agnes asks where Town Square Scare is but she isn’t her usual neighbourly self. Vision uses his mind powers to awaken Agnes from her state. Agnes is confused and is shocked to see Vision. She tells him that he is an Avenger and he is dead. Agnes tells Vision Wanda won’t let anyone leave. Vision uses his mind powers and Agnes is restored to her neighbourly self once again. Agnes drives away and Vision is walking past Ellis Avenue to the edge of town.

Monica receives a text from the engineer she mentioned in Episode Five. She begins to leave with Jimmy when Darcy reveals that Monica’s cells are changing. Monica informs Darcy, she won’t stop until she helps Wanda. Darcy says she can’t go with them as she has not made it through Director Hayward’s last firewall and believes “there is something big here”. Pietro and Wanda begin to bond about how great Westview is. He questions her about how she created it all, implying he is impressed Pietro then asks, “How do you even do all this?”, she struggles to answer. After he reassures her that she can trust him, she answers “I don’t know how I did it”. Wanda then describes feeling alone and empty before she sees Pietro’s corpse sitting in front of her.

Darcy begins to break through Director Hayward’s firewall and is about uncover something big. Director Hayward sees Vision is approaching the edge of Westview and tells his agents to “move out”. Darcy also sees this and questions what Vision is doing. Vision approaches the energy field and begins to walk through it. S.W.O.R.D agents surround him as he struggles to leave. He begins to break down and Darcy runs to help him but an agent holds her back. Billy discovers his powers of telepathy and telekinesis and hears his father in pain. The boys rush to find their mother. Darcy is handcuffed to a S.W.O.R.D vehicle watching Vision die. Wanda asks Billy where his dad is, when Pietro tell her, “it’s not like your dead husband can die twice”.

Wanda uses her powers to remove her brother from the situation at hand. She gets Billy to focus, he closes his eyes, seeing soldiers and believes his father is dying. Wanda stops everything and uses her powers to expand Westview. Jimmy and Monica see this as they are driving away. The S.W.O.R.D agents all start to flee but Darcy is left there and gets absorbed by the energy field. The Response Base changes to a circus and the remaining agents turn into circus performers. As he escapes Director Hayward is talking into a walkie talkie but no one responds.

Wanda in the Middle

Although this episode may be the weakest fans have seen so far, that does not mean it did not deliver. Those who are familiar with the comic books, would have noticed that both Wanda and Vision’s Halloween costumes matched their costumes from the comics. Marvel is infamous for paying homage to the source material for the die hard viewers. We also see this with Pietro in his Halloween costume from the comics as well.

Tommy and Billy get their moment to shine in this episode. The boys act as the Frankie Muniz character breaking the fourth wall and talking to the audience. This came to fruition later in the episode as we find out that Billy possesses powers of telekinesis and telepathy. Comic books fans will know Tommy and Billy as Wiccan and Speed from the Young Avengers. The series may be setting that up as well as the next Doctor Strange movie.

Back at the Response Base, Monica raises the point that if Wanda is the problem, she is also the solution. Implying this all starts and ends with Wanda. As we have seen Wanda has some control over Westview however her perfect neighbourhood is possibly falling under some sort of threat, as she wasn’t able to control the introduction of Pietro. Speaking of Pietro, the question still remains, is this actually Wanda’s twin brother? Throughout the episode Wanda is testing him, he seems to have Pietro’s memories however when he refers to Vision’s death, this seems out of character. Could this be Quiksilver from the X-Men universe? Or is this actually Mephisto?

An Easter Egg , that is catching fan’s eyes is that The Parent Trap and The Incredibles are playing at the movie theatre. The Parent Trap tells the story of twins who switch places, which could be telling of who Pietro really is. This could also be foreshadowing the actions of Billy and Tommy to get Wanda to save their dad. The Incredibles is of course a movie about a superhero family similar to Wanda, Vision and the boys.

In this episode, we learn that Hayward has been tracking Vision and not informing the other S.W.O.R.D agents of this. As seen in the surveillance footage in Episode Five, Wanda takes Vision’s body from S.W.O.R.D Headquarters and she may have saved him from whatever Director Hayward is planning. Vision’s suspicions have grown stronger and we see that outside of Westview he cannot survive. Wanda may have saved Vision by stealing his corpse.

We learn that anyone outside of any scene Wanda is in appears motionless. These people are stuck but Wanda may not know that. In her car on Ellis Avenue, Agnes appears motionless but unlike the others she can speak. Agnes has become a talking point for fans of the series, speculating she is the witch Agatha Harkness. This scene seems to imply that she is just another victim of “the hex”. This could be a way to throw Vision and fans off.

Darcy is discovering a lot of secret information, as well as discovering Director Hayward is tracking Vision, she also uncovers Monica’s medical files. She informs Monica that since she passed through the Westview anomaly twice, her cells are changing. This is definitely the beginning of Monica gaining her powers and becoming Photon, who will feature in Captain Marvel 2. Monica and Jimmy leave to team up with the “aerospace engineer” friend Monica mentioned in Episode Five. Fans have theorised this could be Reed Richards, introducing the Fantastic Four into the MCU. Darcy finally breaks through that firewall and finds out what Director Hayward is really up to however fans will have to wait to find out as Darcy is now a resident of Westview.

WandaVision still has many more questions to answer. What role is Darcy going to play? Why is Director Hayward tracking Vision? Who are Monica and Jimmy going to see? The list gets longer. Similar to Wanda expanding Westview, the show has expanded the minds of Marvel fans eagerly awaiting the next episode.
