Staff WriterRobyn Doolittle’s book Crazy Town: The Rob Ford Story is on its way to a screen near you soon! The rights to the book were bought by Toronto based production company Blue Ice Pictures, over a week ago. One of the producers, Daniel Irons, spoke about the project, saying, “It’s not our intention to do a salacious farce - this is a serious story…Part of it is a story about the city, so I think it’s important to see the city, to see downtown, to see the suburbs…. The story has great drama in it.” According to CBC News, “Talk of a movie about the life of Ford had people on the street providing plenty of suggestion about who could play Toronto’s notorious mayor in a movie. Torontonians who spoke to CBC News on Monday suggested Woody Harrelson or John Goodman. But casting director Marsha Chesley said that finding the perfect person to play Ford wouldn’t be easy. ‘I do think he is a living, walking caricature. He is not like a man on the street. He is someone who looks different, who acts different,’ she said.” The author of the book Robyn Doolittle revealed why she picked Irons to produce the film, saying, “When I met Danny he seemed really interested in it, and he seemed interested in it beyond the comedy aspect of the whole thing. There are, of course, elements of dark comedy that we have seen played out on YouTube, but there’s a real seriousness to this story as well. He seemed interested in all aspects of it.” As for a timeline for the film, Irons said, “The story is very current. It does take some time to write a script and make a film, but we’re on to do this as quickly as possible, while the story is still in people’ minds.”
