Surviving the Tompocalypse of 2014

It began so innocently.  We had no idea that the events to follow would forever change the nine realms.  Well, at least the realm of the Hiddlestoners.  Fans affectionately called the month of January and the first portion of February the TOMPOCALYPSE.  Almost every day there was a form of new Tom Hiddleston related media.

“And, we all drive Jaguars.”

Much like a Jaguar, the Tompocalypse hit the gas hard and didn’t stop until it reached the finish line.  Nearly a month prior to the Superbowl, Jaguar launched its #GoodtobeBad ad campaign featuring Ben Kingsley, Mark Strong, and Tom as the ultimate British bad boys.   To keep interest high leading up to the Superbowl, Jaguar released new content every few days.  In a behind-the-scenes video, Tom said, “A villain is in control.  A villain is a mask of elegance and style behind which is a worrying and brilliant intelligence.  But, the trick is to make it all look easy.  I think the best bad guys are very charming, and very witty, and their villainy, as it were, comes at the twist of the wrist or flick of a finger.  We never break a sweat, we don’t get our hands dirty, and the devil plays all the best tunes…  Particularly in a British accent.” The Jaguar ad aired during the fourth quarter.  Afterward, there was a voting contest for the best Superbowl ad.  Fans voted, and the Good To Be Bad ad won; big surprise, right?

Loki the Complicated, Hilarious, and Unexpected Avenger

Tom had teased during the Thor: The Dark World press tour with the idea that there could be a DVD extra of himself dressed up as Captain America.  Loki wearing Captain America’s costume.  Well, the extra exists, and it’s glorious.  The confidence, the humor, the patriotism… the spandex. The days following the release of the Loki as Cap video can only be described as mass chaos of all things Loki.  Marvel released a deleted scene with Frigga and Thor discussing Loki, and a teaser for the epic blooper reel.  But, what made fangirls faint was the release of Tom auditioning for the role of Thor.  The collective gasps of the Hiddlestoners rang out as they saw Tom with long blonde hair thrust Mjölnir into the air, all while being… shirtless.

2014 Will Have So Much Hiddles!

Only Lovers Left Alive premiered the final version of the trailer, which stars Hiddleston alongside Tilda Swinton as passionate lovers who also happen to be vampires.  The trailer has great music, beautiful shots, and enough suspense and romance to get your blood going.  OLLA releases in the UK on February 21 and will open stateside on April 11.

Disney released trailers for their upcoming films The Pirate Fairy and Muppets Most Wanted.  The Pirate Fairy features Tom as the voice of Captain James Hook, who befriends one of the fairies of Pixie Hollow, but for an ultimately nefarious purpose.  Muppets Most Wanted premiered a new tongue and cheek trailer featuring Tom ripping off chains and wearing a huge mustache.  Both look charming and like they will be a lot of family fun. MTV announced that Tom could be starring in the TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods as Mr. Wednesday.  But, what has been confirmed is that Tom will be starring as the lead in Ben Wheatley’s adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s High-Rise.  Tom will travel to Toronto in February to film Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak.  High-Rise is set to begin filming in June.

“See You in Elle”

Elle UK teased the Hiddlestoners with tweets about Tom making ‘a big announcement’ in their March issue.  What could it be?  Marriage?  A baby?  Retiring?  No, no, and thank god, no.  Tom announced that in the UK there would be special screenings of Only Lovers Left Alive for Valentine’s Day.  The article featured photos of Tom sporting fashionable attire and a heartfelt and hilarious interview.  Elle also released a stylish behind-the-scenes video.

“I’m Driving In Puddles Forever!”

The BBC’s Top Gear featured Tom Hiddleston driving their ‘Reasonably Priced Vehicle.’  In the interview with Tom and host, Jeremy Clarkson, they discussed Tom’s car history, the Jaguar ad, and Tom’s future projects.  Tom admitted that he drives a Jaguar, which seems only apt.  Clarkson also asked Tom to do some impressions, which Tom happily obliged by doing Anthony Hopkins, Arnold Schwarzenegger (sort of), and Peter O’Toole. Then the race track footage aired… and, Tom wore glasses.  Twitter explodes with tweets about the glasses and quickly we had another Trousergate on our hands, except this time it was Glassesgate.  But, back to the lap.  It was a rough start, with Tom stalling out the vehicle, but once he actually got going, he did great – especially with the weather.  The rain came down hard and as Tom himself commented, “I’m driving in puddles forever!”

A Week to Remember

February 2 – February 9 was a proud time to be Hiddlestoner because of Tom’s Spirit Week.  Helmed by @HiddlesEducates  and @Loki_Page, ‘Tom Spirit Week’ brought out the best in everyone.   The event had been planned for months and had been coordinated across various social media platforms. The week began on Sunday February 2, with #ShakespeareSunday, which was created over a year ago by @HollowCrownFans and has been a weekly event since, having a theme of Ceremonies and Ritual (appropriate since it kicked off the now annual Tom’s Spirit Week).  #DanceMoreMonday honored Tom’s energetic spirit and advice, “Never, ever let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do.  Prove the cynics wrong.  Pity them for they have no imagination.  The sky’s the limit.  Your sky.  Your limit.  Now.  Let’s dance.” And, “Dance more.  Smile all the time.  Tell lots of jokes.”

Tuesday was #ActofGoodwill.  This was as simple as telling someone you love them, or as complicated as coordinating a blood drive .  The idea started at NerdHQ at San Diego Comic Con, when @travisthegrimm asked Tom what he thought would be a good idea for a spirit week.  Acts of Goodwill, won, and you’d get extra points if you did it dressed as Shakespeare.  What is truly phenomenal about this day was the abundance of fundraisers, charity events, and goodwill poured out in honor of Tom and for his birthday.  Hiddlestoners Have Heart started in 2012 raising money for UNICEF (of which Tom is an ambassador), and to date they’ve raised £33732.72.  Hiddlestoners on Facebook had an event to raise 33K for Tom’s 33rd birthday.  Another group sold t-shirts that said “Loki Lives,” in order to raise money for Unicef. #WeDoWhatWeWantWednesday, encouraged fans to do anything… legal, that they wanted.  For #TomsTwinThursday fans were encouraged to dress like their favorite Tom characters. Friday was #LokiDay, where fans told people to kneel or get into some mischief.  #SpokenSteveSaturday encouraged listening to Tom recite poetry, reading Shakespeare, or acting like Steve (from MTV’s After Hours), sport a mighty mustache, and get someone Loki’d. At midnight UK time, on February 9, Hiddlestoners came out to show love for Tom by tweeting #HappyBirthdayTomHiddleston.  Within 10 minutes, the hashtag trended worldwide, and maintained through most of Sunday.  The hashtag had over 66.1K uses.

The amount of charity and love from the Hiddlestoner community is moving, not just during the Week but year round.  Thank you to @HiddlesEducates, @Loki_Page, @HiddlestonersHH, @HiddlestonersFB, @LaceAndBooks, @HollowCrownFans, @HiddlesMemes, @HiddleGoddesses, and all the fans who participated with such vigor.

“Now put your shields before your hearts and fight / with hearts more proof than shields.”

December 6, 2013 Shakespeare’s Coriolanus premiered at the Donmar Warehouse in the West End with Tom Hiddleston as the title character.  While being one of Shakespeare’s lesser known works, Coriolanus has consistently sold out every evening since it opened.  The show was so popular that the Donmar had to ad and additional six performances. The Donmar was gracious enough to provide fans with a look backstage prior to a performance.  It’s a rare glimpse into something so intimate and personal that cannot be described but instead felt.  It’s endearing, and makes the play more accessible. On January 30, the Donmar, in association with NTLive, did a live broadcast across the world.   The response from fans was entirely positive.  The show was gritty, emotional, and poignant.  Tom was, of course, praised, and rightly so.  It was a tremendous performance of a grossly complicated and emotionally challenging character. Coriolanus closed on February 13, 2014, after 75 performances.  Tom tweeted, “’And, sir, it is no little thing to make mine eyes to sweat compassion’. So long, Caius Martius.  Be at peace. #Coriolanus”.

“Thou hast made my heart too great for what contains it.”

There was no way to come out of the Tompocalypse unchanged.  Whether it the smallest change by having more photos for the eye candy folder, learning about Shakespeare through seeing Coriolanus, or being overwhelmed and reminded by the goodness of individuals displayed by #ActsofGoodwill Tuesday; there is no mistaking that Tom has effected many lives in a profound and positive way.  So, thank you, Tom Hiddleston, for simply being you.
