Welcome To The White Room Of Pain On This Weeks Vampire Diaries

Elena Butler

Staff Writer

Usually midseason finales are packed with action and jaw dropping moments, and there’s so much going on that you find it hard to focus on one thing for longer than a second.  Unfortunately, while this week Vampire Diaries had some interesting revelations, it wasn’t anything that was considered shocking—although there was one breakup.  Elena discovered more about her father’s past and Damon found out that his long-lost friend, Enzo, was still alive and kicking.  However, neither of their reactions were the ones I was expecting and honestly it was a bit of a letdown.  The fact that at this point the most interesting character on the show is Katherine and said character’s life is on the balance makes me very nervous.  Want to know what else this episode lacked?  Caroline.  Yes, our beloved vampire barbie was not present to bid us farewell as we embarked on another long winter hiatus and that’s just unacceptable.  Read on to see what else happened on “Fifty Shades of Greyson.”  There’s no whips or safe words but there is a white room of pain.

Previously on The Vampire Diaries…

Katherine tried to commit suicide after finding out she was going to die of old age but Stefan saved her.  Stefan decided to move on from Elena by hooking up with someone who looked just like her—Katherine.  Baby steps, Stefan, baby steps.  Elena and Damon became Wes’ new test subjects.  Damon told Elena the story of his friend Enzo, whom he left to die in a fire.  Elena woke up in a lab and found out Enzo wasn’t really dead.

In a cell somewhere in the underground tunnels of Whitmore, Damon is desperately trying to find a way out so he can go look for Elena.  He tries breaking the wall to no avail and even uses the bullet Aaron left behind to try to burst the lock open.  He kicks the cell door in frustration after thinking it didn’t work but to his delight, the door swings open.

We head to the Salvatore manor where a chipper Katherine wakes up next to a shirtless—most likely completely naked, you’re welcome for that visual—Stefan.  She’s about to wake him up but notices that her hair has started to fall out again.  As she gets up to leave, Stefan asks her what’s going on and in a hilarious attempt to keep herself hidden from him, she throws a blanket over her head and wraps herself in it.  She walks out of the room but not before bumping into the wall.  Oh Katherine, never change.  On her way out of the house, she runs into Damon and tells him about her hook up with Stefan.  “I’m gonna barf,” Damon replies, not at all delighted by the news.  Later, he finds his brother and tells him that Elena is missing and that he has a feeling “Dr. Creepy Ken Doll” has her.  They leave in search of leverage in order to get her back.

Meanwhile back at a secret underground lab, Elena wakes up to discover that the place looks familiar to her.  She has memories of it looking a little different and hears a child’s laugh as a ball rolls down the stairs.  Wes makes a note about her being awake and then proceeds to gas her so she goes unconscious again.  Later, he drains blood from her to see how much he can take before she passes out.  Wes asks Elena how Damon justifies killing every member of the Whitmore family but she replies by asking him how he justifies torturing vampires.  The answer is simple; science.  He reads her passages from her father’s journal and tells her he learned all his torturing skills from him.

The Salvatores arrive at Whitmore College and threaten to kill Aaron if he doesn’t help them find Elena.  They start airing their dirty laundry in front of him and Damon tells Stefan he knows about Katherine.  Stefan thinks he’s jealous but Damon insists he’s actually disturbed.  Honestly, I don’t even know why that scene was necessary, but okay.  Aaron asks Damon why he’s not dead and he advices Aaron to shoot vampires in the heart next time.  Damon tells him to call Wes and let him know he will be hurt if he doesn’t return Elena to them.

Back at the lab, Elena realizes they’re in the basement of her father’s clinic—so they’ve been in Mystic Falls this whole time.  Wes receives a call from Aaron who tells them Stefan and Damon will kill him if he doesn’t tell them where to find Elena.  Wes realizes Damon has escaped and tells them to meet him in their classroom.  But “Dr. Creepy Ken Doll” has another plan in mind, he’s going to release Enzo into the world—just for a few hours—so he can catch up with Damon. Before he lets him go, he injects him with something he calls “an insurance policy.”

We head to the woods where Matt is trying to help Katherine stay in shape and prolong her existence.  I have no idea how he got there or why he even agreed because the whole time he’s just whispering under his breath and saying how exercising isn’t going to make a difference.  Matt actually seems to be enjoying Katherine’s slow decay.  He asks her why she hadn’t turned into a vampire again and she explains that her body rejects the blood.  Nadia shows up after Matt told her Katherine was there. She slaps Katherine for attempting to kill herself without saying goodbye. Later, they head back to the Salvatore home and bond over raw kale drinks. Katherine asks Nadia if she thinks it’s possible for her to be forgiven even after all the horrible things she’s done, to which Nadia replies “yes.”  She has an idea that might help keep Katherine alive.

In the white room of pain, Elena is still having memories of herself as a little girl walking down the stairs of the lab and playing with a ball.  She remembers hearing the electricity behind the door but never actually opening it to see what was behind it.  Elena tells Wes there was something about the lab that she always found creepy.  When she asks Wes about Enzo, he tells her he’s taking care of unresolved issues with Damon and Elena starts to worry.

At Whitmore, Damon tells Stefan the truth about his time as the Augustine vampire but leaves out the part about killing every member of the Whitmore family.  They arrive at Wes’ classroom and find that Enzo is the one waiting for them.  He calls Damon by his subject number and although initially Damon is surprised to see him, he seems to get over it fairly quickly.  Enzo introduces himself to Stefan and Damon tells him he’s the Augustine vampire.  Enzo gets butt hurt when Damon asks about Wes instead of asking how he survived the fire.  Meanwhile at the lab, Elena finds out Megan’s family helped fund her father’s studies.  Wes receives a call from Stefan who once again threatens to kill Aaron if he doesn’t free Elena.

Stefan returns to the classroom and Enzo gets really angry when they interrupt his story.  He goes back to telling them how Damon left him in the cage to burn.  After he finishes, he leaves to find something to drink and Damon proceeds with his plan to kill Aaron.  However, Aaron stalls them by saying Wes gave him a bunch of files about Augustine and that maybe there’s information in there they could use to find Elena.  They’re about to leave the classroom when Enzo returns with a bottle of liquor.  He won’t let Damon leave, so Stefan and Aaron have to continue the search alone.

Back in Mystic Falls, Nadia’s idea to keep Katherine alive is for her to embrace her traveler roots and practice her magic.  She can perform the spell that will allow her to take over someone else’s body, just like Gregor did.  Katherine isn’t very convinced, since she never gave the whole traveler thing much thought since she became a vampire.  The problem with Nadia’s plan is that Katherine actually likes her body and doesn’t want to take over just some random person.  Nadia figures out that the reason she wants redemption is because of Stefan and not because of her.  Her feelings get hurt and she lashes out, telling Katherine to go kill herself and implying that no one will miss her.

At Whitmore, Damon is being forced to endure Enzo’s conversation about cricket and art before he finally asks if he wants him to feel guilty for not being able to save him.  Enzo bends over in pain and tells Damon that Wes injected him with poison in order for him to return to the lab for the antidote.  Damon asks him to take him back to the lab and they can finish things together but Enzo reveals that Wes’ orders were for him to kill him.  Enzo throws him out the window but Damon doesn’t want to fight him.  The poison starts taking over Enzo’s heart and he desiccates before Damon can find out where Elena is being kept.  Back at the dorm, Aaron reaches for the files but decides to try to shoot Stefan instead.  The Salvatore is too smart to fall for the trick and catches him redhanded.  When he threatens to hurt him, Aaron spills the beans about Damon killing all of his relatives.  Stefan tells him that not all vampires are like Damon and when he’s heading out of the dorm, Aaron hands him the Augustine files.

Back at the lab, Elena has memories of screams coming from behind the door of his father’s lab.  Greyson stops her from going inside and tells her that she should be happy because on that day, he’s going to save a little girl’s life.  Elena opens her eyes only to find out that Wes is about to inject her with the same compound he used on Jesse.  He stabs her with the needle but Stefan shows up just in time to save her.

At the Mystic Grill, Nadia gives Matt the traveler knife.  She wants him to take care of it and keep it safe because she’s leaving town.  Matt asks why it’s so important and Nadia tells him that Katherine will need it if she changes her mind about performing the spell.  Nadia cries over the fact that she just found Katherine and is about to lose her again.  Matt is able to relate to her and tells her about his own mom.  “Then you know what it’s like to hold on to the hope that maybe she’ll do what you want,” she tells him.  And with those words, Matt agrees to keep the knife safe for Katherine.

Meanwhile at Whitmore, Enzo wakes up to find that Damon took him back to Wes’ lab and injected him with a bunch of antidotes until one finally worked.  Enzo tries to attack him but Damon digs into this chest and takes a hold of his heart.  He tells him how he had to turn off him emotions in order to leave him behind in the fire.  Enzo was his friend and he didn’t want to feel that pain and remorse.  Damon tells him that they’re now even but Enzo says that he’ll always be the kind of person who ruins people and he’ll always be a monster.  It’s obvious Enzo’s words have an effect on him.

Damon returns to Mystic Falls and sees Elena reading her father’s journal.  Instead of being horrified over his behavior and his experiments, she believes that her father’s research was performed to save peoples’ lives.  Elena figures out that Megan was the little girl whose life he saved with vampire blood.  Damon thinks she’s justifying her father’s bad behavior and defending him just like she defends him when he does something wrong.  Elena brings up Aaron’s family and how he killed them but she says she hasn’t left because she loves him.  Damon doesn’t understand why she can’t see that he’s bad for her.  He doesn’t want her to keep defending his awful behavior and is choosing to end things with her instead.  “I won’t change who I am, I can’t.  But I refuse to change you,” he says before walking away.

And upstairs, Katherine is inspecting her wrinkled skin on the mirror when Stefan walks into the room.  She attempts to talk to him about what happened between them and he says they just got swept in the moment.  Stefan tells her he can’t just forget about all the things she did to him.  Katherine knows that no matter how long it takes for him to forgive her, he’ll never love her like he loves Elena.  Stefan holds her hand and tells her he’s sorry that she’s dying.  At Greyson’s lab, Aaron finds Wes unconscious and wakes him only to express his anger for using his life as a bargaining chip.  He takes the needle with the compound he was going to use on Elena and tells Wes he never wants to see him again.  We head back to the Salvatore home where Elena is crying over her breakup with Damon as she watches her father’s journal burn in the fireplace.  The episode ends with Katherine who has changed her mind about performing the spell to continue living in someone else’s body.  She’s telling Nadia that she wants to go on with the plan but before they can finish the conversation, she suffers a heart attack and falls down the stairs.

Earlier I said that I was nervous that the best character would die but only because you never know what’s going to happen with a show like Vampire Diaries.  I feel like it’s pretty obvious that Katherine’s going to perform the spell and put her essence in Elena’s body, since they’re technically the same person, but is that too predictable?  The writers can switch things around and decide to get rid of her all together, which would be heartbreaking but extremely shocking.  I don’t know, what do you guys think will happen?  Will you be okay to see Katherine finally gone for good or do you think she’s going to be hopping into Elena’s body?  Sound off below!
