This week’s Grey’s Anatomy
gets us ready for the departure of Cristina Yang through two different alternate universes, showing what will happen if Yang stays.
Option one: Yang marries Hunt and gives him the future that he’s always wanted. Marriage, a dog, a family, and everything that comes with the white picket fence dream. But if Yang gives Hunt his dream he ends up compromising her own dream. Her success in the medical field slips for the sake of her family, and instead she watches Ross become everything she wanted to be.
Option two: Yang doesn’t marry Hunt and instead marries her medical career, the future she always wanted. She and Hunt continue to do what they’re doing now, casual one-night stands, no commitment, and no chance of marriage. She rises in her medical career as she’s always dreamed and becomes the best of the best. But Hunt sacrifices and suffers because of it. He constantly wishes for that white picket fence life with Yang, and knowing that he’ll never get it causes him to develop a drinking habit that ruins his medical career.
With this episode, Grey’s
viewers get what they rarely get with a character leaving: a chance to get ready to say goodbye. Yang’s departure from the show seems to be folding out to as a parallel of Yang: it’s not emotional or dramatic, simply a sensible, logical reason on why things have to be this way. Cristina Yang is receiving the respectable goodbye that she deserves.
