If you're a pop culture junkie that also gets one hell of a high from writing, being an entertainment journalist is pretty much as good as it gets. It is literally your job to write about celebrities, books, movies, television shows, video games and an entire assortment of other incredibly stimulating topics.
When we were asked to be a part of the 10th anniversary celebration of Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief, I was more than a little excited. I have loved Riordan's work for years, and getting the chance to express my love of The Heroes of Olympus series with my staffers and readers sounded like the best gift I had ever been given.
So much goes into running a campaign like this, with planning and graphics and making sure content isn't duplicated and assigning writers, followed by all of the other work that goes into actually getting the piece published. But all of that pales in comparison to what the people at Disney-Hyperion and Big Honcho Media are doing.
These are the people that are coordinating all of the things I just mentioned, but they're doing it with a ton of sites, while I'm working on making it happen for just one. Brittany Kaback faithfully and painstakingly sends frequent emails to every participant, ensuring that we are all up-to-date with what's happening for the month, and what's coming down the pipeline.
To thank us for participating, they send us some pretty incredible stuff, too. Take a look below to see all of the awesome and thoughtful "Presents from Percy" sent to those participating in the Percy Pack campaign.
First off we've got Dana'a Bakery macarons, with the sticker boldly claiming that Dana's boasts "the original American macaron."
I'm ashamed to say that this was my first experience with macarons, but it most certainly will not be my last. These crunchy (yet creamy? They're very hard to describe) treats were delectable, and even decorated for Percy's birthday!
Things always taste better when there's some ambiance involved, you know? I appreciate the attention to detail.
I love mugs. I like to collect cool mugs, and this one fits in perfectly. It's simplistic, yet bold. Somehow I feel like drinking my coffee from this will give me some sort of boost. Anything to get through the day, right?
Next up we have an absolutely gorgeous set of coasters. The scene depicted on the weighty clay (stone?) coasters is stunning... almost too stunning. Like, I don't want to actually put a potentially moist drink on it. They'll probably just sit on my bookcase, instead...
And, finally, what it's all about. The magnificently beautiful Greek Heroes. It is big and heavy and filled with spectacular art to accompany Riordan's brilliant words. It is something that will be proudly displayed among my most treasured literary collection. Well, after I read it a few times, that is.
There will be some more details about how to pre-order Greek Heroes and what it's all about below; but trust me when I say, it will be money well spent. Some vices are worth indulging in.
It is an honor and privilege to continue our work on the Percy Pack campaign. Thank you to Disney-Hyperion and Big Honcho for being such thoughtful leaders, and for making this such a truly enjoyable adventure.

Told in the funny, irreverent style readers have come to expect from Percy, ( I've had some bad experiences in my time, but the heroes I'm going to tell you about were the original old school hard luck cases. They boldly screwed up where no one had screwed up before. . .) and enhanced with vibrant artwork by Caldecott Honoree John Rocco, this story collection will become the new must-have classic for Rick Riordan's legions of devoted fans--and for anyone who needs a hero. So get your flaming spear. Put on your lion skin cape. Polish your shield and make sure you've got arrows in your quiver. We're going back about four thousand years to decapitate monsters, save some kingdoms, shoot a few gods in the butt, raid the Underworld, and steal loot from evil people. Then, for dessert, we'll die painful tragic deaths. Ready? Sweet. Let's do this.
