Why Benedict Cumberbatch Nearly Said No To Sherlock

As hard as it is to imagine anyone else in what just may have become the most iconic television portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, ever, Benedict Cumberbatch recently admitted that he initially had “pause for thought” before accepting the role.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cumberbatch stated “My reservation was, ‘Well, this is a very iconic character, there will be a lot of attention on it’ – this was before I had had any significant success,” he explained.

“I knew there would still be a lot of focus on it. And while I had done work, it wasn’t stepping into the populist limelight like playing a character like Holmes.”

Being able to work with creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat didn’t hurt in swaying his decision, Cumberbatch added that their passion for Sherlock was what convinced him to take on the role.

“I thought, ‘If I’m going to do this – if I’m going to step into the limelight with a large leading role of iconic status – then I might as well do it with these people’,” he said.

“They know what they’re doing and I completely trust them. I felt like I was being asked to join the family and have some fun.”

Fans in the UK have already seen the entirety of series 3 which ended on January 12, fans in the US (who haven’t already gone through some backchannels to find it) will be able to see it starting tomorrow night on PBS.
