Will Smith has revealed that he has never met the real Jared Leto, despite sharing screen time with him in new movie Suicide Squad.
The film sees Leto take on the infamous role of The Joker, the super-villain and adversary of Batman, and Smith, who plays Deadshot, has said that he was so immersed in the character, he still does not know what Leto is like as a person.
Smith told Beats 1, “I’ve never actually met Jared Leto. We worked together for six months and we’ve never exchanged a word outside of ‘Action’ and ‘Cut’”, adding that Leto was “all in on The Joker”.
This follows the previous claim from castmate Adam Beach (Slipknot) that Leto had “sent [Margot Robbie, who plays Harley Quinn] a nice love letter with a black box with a rat in it – a live rat”, while also sending “bullets to Will [Smith] with a letter.”
Leto becomes the latest in a line of actors to play The Joker, which has included Jack Nicholson and the late Heath Ledger. Ledger locked himself in a hotel room, kept a diary and “immerse[d] himself in the… character”, according to his father Kim.
Similar to Ledger, Leto has become renowned for the way in which he takes on roles; for his Oscar-winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club, he shaved his head, lost 30 pounds and did not break character while filming.
