We could not be more thrilled by this news if we tried: Will Smith is officially “in talks” to star in the upcoming sequel of Independence Day! Hell yeah, that means we are totally getting an Independence Day 2, folks. Genius.
Director, Roland Emmerich spilled the beans at a recent press junket by saying that Smith could be back to play his character, Captain Steven Hiller, in the much anticipated sci-fi sequel.
This excellent news comes on the back of rumours that a second movie would never happen. So fans are sure to be feeling relieved. And really, who isn’t a fan of Independence Day? That 1996 classic was pretty ace. Fingers crossed the sequel will be as good.
Emmerich is busy promoting White House Down at the moment - his latest project which features Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx. The film makes a clever little reference to Independence Day’s iconic exploding White House scene.
In an interview with Digital Spy, Emmerich stated, “I sometimes say no, Will Smith will not be in it because he didn’t want to do it at first. Now we have a meeting planned, we want to talk about it again. Anything can happen.”
Sadly, back in June Smith did tell Digital Spy in a brief interview about his latest movie, After Earth, that he would steer clear of blockbusters from now on. “I think I’m going to start moving out of that and finding more danger in my artistic choices.” But hopefully Emmerich’s more recent comments mean he will make an exception for this.
The Independence Day sequel is looking like it will open in cinemas late 2015 or early 2016. Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum have already announced their official return.
How excited are you guys?
