Woody Allen’s ‘Wonder Wheel’ Trailer Talk

Woody Allen is back this holiday season with Wonder Wheel starring Kate Winslet. Check out the first trailer here!

No it’s not Wonder Woman (2017), Wonderstruck (2017), Professor Marston and the Wonder Women (2017), or Wonder (2017) starring Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson, it’s another wonderful movie called Wonder Wheel (2017), starring Kate Winslet in Woody Allen’s latest Amazon Studios film, and the first trailer was just recently released.

Last seen in Collateral Beauty (2016) and currently seen in The Mountain Between Us (2017) with Idris Elba, Kate Winslet stars as Ginny, a troubled wife of a Coney Island carousel operator in the 1950s, in her first Woody Allen picture.

It doesn’t take long for viewers to pick up on the fact that this is a Woody Allen film. This writer has known and expected a Woody Allen-directed movie every year since he has been doing so since 1977, but didn’t know Wonder Wheel was that until the trailer began and saw the telltale hints. Woody Allen’s filmmaking approach is more akin to theatrical plays, and while most of the time it’s a unique and entertaining watch, the dialogue sometimes just does not sound like real life, or at least, real life in the movies. Phrases like “Why are you getting so heated?” and “Everything is coming apart” are those unnecessary utterances when they are already heavily implied. This combined with the music and impressive production design gives off the Woody Allen vibe. Cafe Society (2016) was last year’s Woody Allen film, and that was a fairly enjoyable ride and modest success, so let’s hope that this carnival drama follows suit.

Wonder Wheel will star Kate Winslet (Titanic (1997)), Justin Timberlake (Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)), Juno Temple (Maleficent (2014)), Jim Belushi (According to Jim (2001-09)), and Debi Mazar (Goodfellas (1990)), and circles into select theaters on December 1, 2017.
