Back in November, Fantasy Flight Games announced that they were merging with publishing and distributing company Asmodee Group. FFG will keep selling most their own products under their name and logo, but some of their property will be moved under the Asmodee name, as it may be a better fit there. The same can be said for Asmodee products as well - those that fit under their name remain, and those that fit with FFG will be moved. It's a tag team effort!
The first big announcement of the merger is here, and it concerns one of the best-selling FFG games of all time. Catan has been bought by the Asmodee group from Mayfair Games. Asmodee has created a creative unit within their company called Catan Studio, which will look over the much-beloved game. In their press release, the company states they look to grow the Catan spectrum as well as give a lot of love to the community. Peter C. Fenlon, the former CEO of Mayfair Games, is joining in on the fun, taking on his new role as CEO of Catan Studio. Speaking on the new unit, Fenlon said:
My team and I are proud to join the Asmodee Group and Stéphane Carville, with whom we share a common vision and strategy for the development of Catan. The creation of Catan Studio is a prelude to the further development and growth of the Catan brand. We are thrilled about the prospect of adding our powerful brand-development team to Asmodee’s energy, resources and group capabilities.
Catan was invented in 1995 by Klaus Teuber and has become one of the premiere tabletop games to ever exist. Over 23 million copies of the game have been sold, including the seven extensions and expansions the company has added on since the game's inception.
