World’s Oldest Person, Misao Okawa, Dies At 117

The world’s oldest person, Misao Okawa, has passed away – but not before she graced this good Earth for 117 years.

The world’s oldest person has passed away. Misao Okawa of Japan died in Osaka on April 1st. Okawa had just turned 117 on March 5th.

A worker at Okawa’s nursing home shared that the centenarian “went peacefully” and was surrounded by family and the care workers who admired her deeply. Okawa’s surviving family include her 92-year-old son and 2-year-old great-grandson.

A testimony to how quickly time goes by for all, Okawa had recently stated that her life seemed rather short.

Okawa was declared the world’s oldest person by Guinness World Records in 2013. Guinness is in the process of determining who will now take Okawa’s title. The oldest person currently in Japan is a 115-year-old woman in Tokyo. At a current total of 58,000, Japan has the most citizens over the age of 100 in the world and almost 90% are women.
