Is there a third instalment of the X-Files movies in the works? It looks like it might be on the cards. In a recent interview with Empire, show creator Chris Carter opened up about the possibility of a third movie.

“It’s really up to Twentieth Century Fox, whether they have the will to do it. I think all of us are interested in putting the band back together. I have an idea for a third movie in my head. The colonisation date has passed and that is something we wouldn’t ignore. For the second movie, we only had the budget for a standalone story, but we want to go back to the mythology.”

For those of you unaware of the significance of the ‘colonisation date’, it refers to December 22, 2012. In the world of The X-Files, the colonisation of earth was the end game in the Syndicate’s Project, in collaboration with a race of alien colonists.

This is a depiction of what the earth’s colonisation would look like, as dreamt by Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) in the series.

In the same interview, Carter revealed that English actor and one time Gillian Anderson co-star Simon Pegg (How To Lose Friends And Alienate People) almost appeared in the second film, X-Files: I Want To Believe, and hinted at the possibility of him finding his way into the third film, were it to happen.

“…Gillian worked with Simon Pegg on a movie and told me that he was a big fan. We actually thought about putting him in the second movie, but there was no part for him. I certainly would think about him if we were to go forward in any way.”

Both stars of the original series, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, have expressed their interest in an X Files 3 movie with Anderson saying at this year’s Comic-Con: “A film would be great” and Duchovny having previously stated: “

I would love to do another film, or more. I

think we’re all game for it. I know I’m kind of perplexed that Fox isn’t more enthusiastic”.

So what do you think X-Philes? Are you up for another movie? Are you as interested as I am in seeing if they can explain the colonisation? Or would you rather them head in a different direction? Given we’re approaching the 20th anniversary of the first ever X-Files episode next month, the time certainly seems right to want to believe again.
