2013 will go down as the year of many surprises and memorable performances both in the music and television industry. Here are some that left their mark this past year: LORDE We were definitely were in need of “a different kind of buzz” in 2013 and Lorde succeeded with one of the most unique, soft-spoken chart-topping songs of the century with “Royals.” It seemed as though Lorde, the New Zealand teenage popstar, came out of nowhere earlier this year after debuting her EP online for free late last year. Her debut album, Pure Heroine has received great reviews thus far. Add some Grammy nominations and some huge headline shows and we may soon be calling Lorde, Queen Bee! [youtube=] CHANCE THE RAPPER Many have called him the “next big thing” in hip-hop. Others said that he will transform Chicago, where he hails from, into the new American capital of Hip-Hop. Nevertheless, Chance the Rapper has disrupted the hip-hop scene. While he has yet to have a debut album, many have already named him the next great hip-hop star. If you haven’t already, check out his “Acid Rap” mixtape, which proves he can reshape the hip-hop scene. “Acid Rap” has garnered excellent reviews and has led to collaborations with Justin Bieber and Lil Wayne. His debut LP will be out early next year and we anxiously await its presence.   TATIANA MASLANY, ORPHAN BLACK She is considered by many to be the most overlooked actress of 2013. Tatiana Maslany’s role in Orphan Black gained an incredible amount of respect for the sci-fi genre. She has also been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best TV Actress in a Drama for her performances in the show. Her performances are so varied and so intense they almost makes you forget you are watching science fiction. MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS According to Billboard, “Thrift Shop" was the biggest song of 2013. "Can't Hold Us" made Macklemore & Ryan Lewis the first duo to send their first two singles to the top of the Hot 100 chart. "Same Love" was a gay-rights rallying cry that climbed into the Top 20 and propelled Mary Lambert’s career into the spotlight. The album that housed all of these songs, "The Heist," is nominated for  Album of the Year at the upcoming Grammys. All in all, this Seattle Hip-Hop duo has climbed the charts and proved they are here to stay! COREY STOLL, HOUSE OF CARDS In a year where some of the best television shows were on Netflix, Corey Stoll stood out in his role as US Representative Peter Russo on the hit show House of Cards. In this addictive and popular show, Stoll managed to play a man who has noble aspirations but personal demons that make us yearn to find out what he'll do next. ARIANA GRANDE As her last name alludes, Ariana Grande has woven a career for herself this year that would daunt any mere mortal. Following her success at Nickelodeon, the 20-year-old set her sights on entering the music scene. Before her debut album, Yours Truly, debuted atop the Billboard 200 chart in September, Grande's single "The Way" (featuring Mac Miller) notched a surprising Top 10 debut on the Hot 100 and garnered endless comparisons to one of Mariah Carey's 90s jams. Grande garnered further acclaim in 2013 when she gave a stunning performance at the recent American Music Awards. LIZZY CAPLAN, MASTERS OF SEX While she is not new to the television world by any stretch of the imagination, actress and comedian Lizzy Caplan received high praise this year for her dramatic work on Showtime’s period drama, Masters of Sex. While we all knew she could portray a sassy, attractive woman with vigor, Caplan was also able to peel back the layers with Virginia Johnson and give audiences a much stronger, more unique view of women of that era. DISCLOSURE It seems like every year there is a breakout EDM artist. We’ve had Avicii, Tiesto, and Krewella to name a few in the past and this year we were graced with Disclosure. Disclosure is new to the music scene and offers a unique taste of EDM style music without the many bass drops typical in most EDM songs. Disclosure is made up of brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence who emerged onto the EDM scene with their debut album “Settle.” If you haven’t heard any of their songs, checkout “Latch” and “White Noise” which are pure, funky, and out of this world. Be sure to keep an eye on these guys in the upcoming year too! ICONA POP The Swedish pop duo Icona Pop first emerged onto the music scene with their anthem “Girls” that climbed the Top 10 of the Hot 100 Billboard Chart earlier in the year. Their fame continued to grow after  “I Love It” became the theme song for Snooki and JWOW's show on MTV. This Is… Icona Pop, the debut album from Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo, proved to be a surprising hit, and the ladies followed their fall album release with an announcement that they'd be hitting the road next year with Miley Cyrus on her North American tour, then with Katy Perry on her U.K. run. Let’s hope they release more pop anthems for us to go crazy to next year!
