You’ve Got Mail: John Lennon, Charlton Heston And Others To Be Featured On US Postal Stamps

In the next couple of years, stamp collectors will have some interesting new stamp subjects to add to their collection! Among the plans for the coming years are Dora the Explorer, assassinated gay rights activist Harvey Milk, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and, controversially enough, Liverpool-born John Lennon of the Beatles.

With names such as these, the U.S. Postal Service is turning in a new direction with which they are hoping to appeal to the younger generations. Traditional philatelists are not all equally happy with these changes, though, as, for instance, John Lennon is set to be the first non-American to feature on a U.S. post stamp, a real break from tradition.

Other stamp subjects in the planning, according to the Washington Post, are actor and ex-NRA president Charlton Heston, NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain, guitarist Jimi Hendrix, rock singer Janis Joplin and a reissue of Elvis Presley, which has proven to be the Postal Service’s best-selling stamp. There are many more, however, a full list of which you can find here.

Susan McGowan, Postal Service’s executive director for stamp services, announced that these names are “subject to change” at any time, but some of the stamps are already in the designing stage and will therefore most likely hit the post offices quite soon.

So what do you think of this list? Is the U.S. Postal Service heading in the right direction, or is it a mistake to feature non-Americans on the stamps? Let us know!
