Courtesy of fanpop.comFormer t.A.T.u. member Yulia Volkova left many fans shocked, angry, and confused after a video emerged of the singer using gay slurs and expressing her overall disdain for gay men.
Volkova recently told the host of the Ukranian TV show Lie Detector that she would “condemn” her son if he was gay and that “God created man for the sake of procreation”.
She added, “I want to say that I’m not against gays, I just want my son to be a real man, not a f*g.”
Volkova went on to say that she would be fine if her daughter were a lesbian, and that “lesbians look aesthetically much nicer than two men holding their hands or kissing”.
Volkova rose to fame in 2000 with Lena Katina as part of the Russian duo t.A.T.u. The pair became a worldwide success with the release of their debut single “All The Things She Said”. Much of the duo’s music and image included lesbian themes, and the pair would often kiss and hold hands in videos and on stage.
Though many critics dismissed the lesbian elements of the duo as a marketing ploy to titillate men, the group did gain a substantial LGBT following and often came out in support of gay rights during interviews.
In a 2006 interview with The Independent, Volkova stated, “Our slogan is to love and it’s not important whom to love. We want to say that a boy can love a boy and a girl can love a girl. If all people would love each other, it would be easier to live in this world. If people are led by hatred and evil, nothing good would happen from this.”
Volkova confirmed her own bisexuality in 2012.
t.A.T.u. split in 2011 for the two singers to embark on solo careers. Unless Volkova is able to do some serious damage control in the days to come, her days in the music business may now be over.
