ZZ Ward debuted her first album Til the Casket Drops in 2012 and proceeded to rock the music world with her soulful vocals and bluesy sound. She’s back with her second album and we are not afraid to say that The Storm is even better then her first album. ZZ Ward is on the Hollywood label and they have really let her shine as an artist. On her first album, she had huge hits with "Last Love Song" and "Til the Casket Drops" which were featured on Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars, which aided in bringing her music to the masses. She’s also toured with legends like Eric Clapton, but now she’s headlining her own tour.
Ward's confidence shines on The Storm
The Storm includes 11 new tracks with each one better then the one before. She sings a lot about romance and knowing that no matter what she is the best anyone will ever have. Her confidence rings through the album and lets all of us who are listening or singing along feel the same way. Here is a track by track review of the album and after we’ll tell you our favorite ones! Keep reading.
The Storm track by track
This song is haunting from beginning to end. Ward goes from slow ballad to a fast track throughout the song, making it an irresistible and catchy one to sing along to.
This one features vocals from Fantastic Negrito and it was the first single off the album. "Cannonball" is a bluesy jam that will inspire you to sit and think over life, while finding it hard not to tap along with the song. If you’re a musician, we think this song could spur some jam sessions. It’s an instant favorite.
"Help Me Mamma"
Ward doesn’t hold back at all on this powerful track as she belts out her heart to let the man who wronged her how wrong he is. It’s catchy and it's full of heart.
This is the title track of the album and we couldn’t love it more. This song is about reaching out for help when you have no strength left in yourself and it’s powerful. Ward’s vocals are amazing as she sails through the lyrics.
This song features vocals from Fitz and it’s your basic fun song to get you moving after a powerful ballad. These two sound amazing together so we hope there will be more collaborations in the future.
"Let It Burn"
This is a fun song that you will definitely be singing along to after just one listen.
"Bag of Bones"
A lot of songs on this album are about being wronged in love, but this one is that song about being completely lost in a relationship so far that you aren’t a person at all without the other person. It’s backed by a simple array of instruments and vocals, letting Ward shine and make us all feel what she’s feeling.
"She Ain’t Me"
Ward sings about being the best this guy’s ever had and how much he’s gonna miss her when he realizes that even though he has someone else, she’ll never come close. It’s a strong track filled with a great blues vibe that’ll have you swaying.
"If You Stayed"
The background of this song reminds us a lot of "Last Love Song" but it will break your heart as you listen to her belt out how much she hurts when she realizes she’s really lost the love of her life. This song hurts but in that good way great music does.
This song is catchy and it has great lyrics. We love this one and we haven’t been able to stop singing it since we heard it when the album dropped.
This one features Gary Clark Jr and it was on the Cars 3 soundtrack. It’s fun and it’ll be one of your favorites, easily.
The Storm is an excellent album with the highlights being Ride, Hold On, The Storm, and Cannonball though every track on this album is fantastic. If you’ve listened, tell us your thoughts and if you want to see her live we’ve added a link to a list of her upcoming shows. She puts on an amazing show!
