Great news for the world of theatre. Angela Lansbury is set to take the London stage by storm after a 40-year absence in a brand new production from Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit.
She will be reprising the role of Madame Arcati, which earned her a Tony Award after she first played it in 2009 on Broadway. The New York Times has described her portrayal of Arcati as “very self-serious medium on the prowl for vibrations from the spirit world”.
She earned numerous other awards and recognitions for her role in the play, and she has constantly said the original production was a “wonderful experience”.
Angela has not been in the West End since 1974, when she played the lead role in the Sondheim’s Gypsy, based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee.
Even though the actress is over 80 years old and has had both knee and hip replacements, she seems more than ready and thrilled to be returning for 15 weeks to the play. “I hope to God I can still fly around at the same rate!”
Blithe Spirit opens March 18, 2014 at the Gielgud Theatre.
