Billboard boss Bill Werde has criticised Lady Gaga for using YouTube’s Vevo to promote her new single ‘Applause’.

Billboard Hot 100 recently adjusted their chart-placing formula so it would include online streams, which includes the number of clicks a lyric video, audio stream or music video gets on Vevo.

Lady Gaga encouraged her fans to watch the clip of ‘Applause’ and then re-tweet it so other fans could watch it to increase the number of streams. She also included a link to watch the video on loop for nine hours.

“As artist tweeting out and Facebooking a link that enables a fan to hit play and leave their computer is not the spirit of why we chart. I just hate it when anyone tries to game the charts, be it fans or artists. It’s not in the spirit of what we do, celebrating success,” Werde tweeted.

Gaga’s “Little Monsters” have been accused of creating playlists on YouTube that contain the video for “Applause” over 150 times, clicking play and letting the playlist run overnight.

When asked by super producer Doctor Luke about the streaming, Werde said, ”I’m pretty sure YouTube spam filters catch it. Will confirm tmw.”

Despite getting threatening messages online, Werde claims he will continue to be a personal fan of Gaga. “I’ve been [and] remain a fan of Gaga’s. I have previously tweeted my affinity for ‘Applause’.”

At the moment, Gaga is 200,000 downloads behind Katy Perry’s “Roar”, according to the official forecast from Nielsen SoundScan sales figures, having only sold 225,000 copies during its first week on sale in the US.
