The Boy Scouts of America has been coming under fire for years over their ban of gay scouts and gay scout leaders. Now, as the BSA council debates whether to drop the ban or not, Train has announced their decision of dropping out of the Boy Scout Jamboree until the band is lifted.
Train and Carly Rae Jepsen were originally slated to headline the event. However, Train had not dropped out when a petition stated by, gay Eagle Scout, Derek Nance urging Train and Carly Rae to drop their performances caught their eye.
According to a statement released on their website Train “were not aware of any policy barring openly gay people from participation within the organization. Train strongly opposes any kind of policy that questions the equality of any American citizen.”
Now that Train has responded, attention has turned to Carly Rae Jepsen who has not responded to the petition which has 5,000 signatures.
Nance said, “I’m thrilled that my petition brought the Boy Scouts’ hurtful anti-gay policy to Train’s attention…more than [5,000] people are wondering, “will Carly Rae Jepsen do the same?”
UPDATE: Carly Rae Jepsen has joined Train in canceling the Boy Scout Jamboree. The singer has confirmed this on her Twitter account this morning by tweeting “As an artist who believes in equality for all people, I will not be participating in the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree this summer…”
