Captain Marvel star Brie Larson spoke about the important role the superhero plays in the lives of young girls, and about the best part of taking the role.

The response to Brie Larson being cast as the lead in the upcoming Captain Marvel film has been overwhelmingly positive. Even Chris Evans, Captain America himself, thought she was perfect for the role, telling reporters that he thinks she’s “phenomenal”.

Larson has already begun doing her research, starting with Captain Marvel Vol 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More by Kelly Sue DeConnick and David Lopez. DeConnick and Lopez’s run is widely regarded as being the reason for Captain Marvel’s popularity. There is even a large subsection of fans devoted to the superhero who call themselves the Carol Corps, and who find inspiration in reading her stories.

In addition to picking an awesome place to start her research, Larson has also been retweeting images of young fans cosplaying as Captain Marvel. At the Toronto International Film Festival she spoke about the importance of Captain Marvel, specifically how important she is to young girls. While there’s nothing wrong with Batman or Spider-Man, it is nice to be able to look at a superhero and see a reflection of yourself.

“The thing that’s been the most exciting now is on social media I get sent a lot of pictures of young girls in the Captain Marvel costume and I’m excited to see more of that. She’s such a great symbol for young girls, and realizing what a deficit we have, that we don’t have more of those. I think it’s really cool to see a girl in a Batman costume or a Spider-Man costume, but I”m really excited that there’s a symbol of women. I think that’s really important.”

Captain Marvel debuts in theatres on March 8, 2019. In the meantime, you can make the wait easier by stocking up on the comics. Your local comic book store, the library, or favourite online retailer will likely have the trade paperbacks in stock, and you can get a feel for the character. Marvel studio head Kevin Feige has said that the film version of Carol Danvers will be very similar to the comics version, much to the relief of devoted fans.
