It looks like the producers of the Bond franchise are hoping to repeat the phenomenal success of last year’s Skyfall by apparently rearranging their production schedule to allow Sam Mendes to return as the director of the 24th film in the franchise.

Mendes announced in March that he would not be returning to the director’s chair for the as-yet-unnamed 24thBond film due to existing theatre commitments. Mendes is the director of the new musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory starring Douglas Hodge, which is currently in previews at Drury Lane Theatre, London, and is due to transfer to Broadway later this year. He is also planning a new production of King Lear as well.

However, producer Barbara Broccoli has agreed to hold off on starting filming until Mr. Mendes is available for the project.  It comes as no surprise that Mendes is the first choice to the helm of the next Bond seeing as 2012’s Skyfall grossed a franchise-topping $1.1 billion worldwide and set a new UK Box Office record of over £100million on home soil.

Writer John Logan and star Daniel Craig are also set to return to the film, which is due for provisional release in 2016.

This news follows previous speculation that  Sony/MGM representatives were considering Hollywood hard hitters such as Christopher Nolan or Ang Lee to replace Sam Mendes.
