On March 24th, fans of Dancing With the Stars were shocked to discover that it a double elimination week which saw both swimmer Diana Nyad and hockey player Sean Avery take their final bows in the ballroom. With Billie Dee Williams receiving the lowest scores of the night and still remaining in competition, it seemed quite obvious that Avery had received one the the lowest amounts of viewer votes, causing his exit from the show.
The next day on Good Morning America, Avery revealed that it was an argument with producer Conrad Green that cost him his early elimination. “I think we knew as of probably Monday last week that our fate was sealed,” he said, “I had a conversation with Conrad, one of the producers (according to a source, Avery told him to “Go f*** himself”), and I was upset at the package that they had brought in the week previous, and it was a very tacky attempt to show me as the bad boy of DWTS. And I think in reality TV or some sort of competition, if you have a disagreement with the producers then generally that seals your fate quite early.”
So, what was the package about? According to The Eastern Tribune, “The ABC video package in question showed Avery’s notorious “sloppy seconds” comment he publicly made about his ex-girlfriend, Elisha Cuthbert, which got him suspended from the National Hockey League in 2008. He later apologized for that comment.” Guess it was an episode that Avery did not want people to remember.
ABC issued a written statement explaining that eliminations were only based on public votes and judges’s scores. However, Avery’s elimination was clearly not fair for his dancing partner, Karina Smirnoff. Rumor has it that she could be a guest judge for the rest of the season.
