Dave Grohl: Foo Fighters “Is The Dumbest Band Name Ever”

Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl sat down with Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes to talk about New Orleans, Kurt Cobain, and his band's "dumb" name.

Dave Grohl shocked and humored fans of his legendary rock band, Foo Fighters, by going out on a limb to call it “the dumbest band name ever.”

The news came in the form of the most recent 60 Minutes episode, in which Grohl sat down with Anderson Cooper for an interview preceding the release of their new album, Sonic Highways, on November 10. During his chat with Cooper, Grohl relayed several interesting tidbits, including his views on Bob Dylan and American Idol, New Orleans, and, of course, the death of Kurt Cobain and how it had affected his life on a personal level.

However, it was Grohl’s opinion on his own band’s name that stuck with viewers, especially fans of the prolific rock ‘n’ roll outlet: “Had I imagined that it would last more than a month-and-a-half, I might have named it something else. It’s the dumbest band name ever.”

Still, as Grohl went on to explain immediately thereafter, “Foo Fighters is a slang term that they used for UFOs in World War II.” Seems pretty cool to me.

If Grohl had realized they were going to be such a big success, what do you think they could have alternatively named the Foo Fighters?
