Again, Donald Trump is making headlines and outraging the general public after making a comment Wednesday, where he said that if abortions are outlawed in the United States and women still go through with them, then he believes they should face punishment.
However, after serious backlash, even from anti-abortion supporters, he took back what he said and stepped away from his position.
Trump recently said in an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews that he is “pro-life” and that “conservative Republicans” would want women to be punished if they were illegal.
“You go back to a positive like they had where they would perhaps go to illegal places, but we have to ban it,” Trump said in his interview. “There has to be some form of punishment.”
After Trump made that comment, which technically said that women who go through with illegal abortions would have to face some kind of punishment, critics went wild, accusing him of continuously showing prejudice and hatred toward women.
However, hours later, Trump came to his senses and realized that his comments may spark a rivalry that could not only hurt his campaign, but lead to even more controversy.
“If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman,” Trump said after his initial interview. “The woman is a victim in this case, as is the life in her womb.”
Trump is currently the GOP frontrunner and is close to winning the number of delegates needed to clinch the GOP nomination. This past week, the Republican presidential candidates all took back their vow, saying they would not support the future GOP candidate, if it is in fact Trump.
