Carnival Films just can’t seem to get enough of the 20th century. According to Deadline, after creating the popular Emmy-winning drama Downton Abbey, the company is now planning to revisit the era with a drama seen through the eyes of Winston Churchill, one of Britain’s most famous politicians.
The series will be based on a book written by Michael Shelden, who focused not on the popular image of the older Churchill and his cigar, but on his earlier years, which are supposedly no less interesting.
”Most people today think of Winston Churchill as simply the wartime British bulldog – a jowly, cigar-chomping old fighter demanding blood, sweat and tears from his nation,” the description of the book reads. “But the well-known story of the elder statesman has overshadowed an earlier part of his life that is no less fascinating, and that has never before been fully told. It is a tale of romance, ambition, intrigue and glamour in Edwardian London, when the city was the centre of the world, and when its best and brightest were dazzled by the meteoric rise to power of a young politician with a famous name and a long aristocratic background.”
There is no release date set for the project, and now casting announcements have been made. Season Four of Downton Abbey will premiere on Sunday September 22nd on ITV in the UK, and will air in US in January.
