Sheerios hailing from New Zealand rejoice! Ed Sheeran has not only fallen in love with your country but he has considered becoming a citizen.

After spending time in New Zealand during part of the gap year he took from the music industry, Sheeran fell in love, and the singer-songwriter (yes, he did pen the tune “I See Fire” for The Hobbit, which was coincidentally filmed in New Zealand!) originally from Framlingham, Suffolk, England has admitted to wanting to spend more time there. “I did ask for citizenship,” Sheeran explained to the Daily Star, “and I think we got an email from someone involved with that. So maybe that’s going to happen. I could be a citizen.”

Fueling Sheeran’s love for the country, aside from the beautiful scenery, is its relative safety, something that seems more appealing given the current political atmosphere. “I’ve always said that if a world war breaks out, the one place I would go to is New Zealand because no-one is going to be bothered to come that far to invade. They’ll be like, ‘Ah, we’ll leave them be.'”

The singer, who just celebrated his 26th birthday by releasing a new song “How Would You Feel,” believes that the move wouldn’t cause a problem in his relationship with girlfriend Cherry Seaborn. “I spent every day for a year with this certain person, we kind of have a strong relationship now which is good. I’m really secure now, we live together and we have cats, and I think, when you have cats, that’s kind of it.”

Whether or not he decides to take up permanent residence in the land of the Kiwis, New Zealanders can rest easy with the assurance that Ed Sheeran will be back soon, promising to return once his new album Divide is released on March 3.
