As the screenwriter for such well-known films as Sunshine, 28 Days Later, Never Let Me Go and Dredd, Alex Garland made the move to directing for 2014’s Ex Machina, and as audiences eagerly await his latest film, Annihilation—starring Natalie Portman as a member of a scientific exploration of something called The Shimmer—Garland is already working on his next project, this time for television.
Garland actually signed on to work with FX back in 2017—and now actual movement is being made to start the project, an eight-part TV experience that will be a bit closer to Ex Machina than to Annihilation.
“The next project, provided it happens—hopefully we're gonna shoot it later this year—[and it’s] an eight-part television series for FX,” he said in an interview with Fandango. “It’s a sort of science fiction, but it's a much more technology-based sci-fi whereas Annihilation is a more hallucinogenic form of sci-fi and more fantastical form of sci-fi.”
Though no details of the plot were released, Garland did reveal that everything was already written, so the matter now turns to how much of the project he wants to direct, something he is still unsure of, saying that for “practical reasons” it just might not be possible for him to be in the director’s chair for all eight episodes.
For now, audiences still have Annihilation to look forward to. It hits theaters February 23rd, and you can watch the trailer below.
