Facebook has undoubtedly been one of the most-used social media sites of all time. Now, the site is looking to add yet another useful feature! According to new information, the popular network will add a safety check. This feature’s purpose will be to help you inform your close ones that you’re fine during a disaster.
Safety Check will be updatable via Facebook. For mobile users, it works for both Android and iOS. It also works for regular computers.
Tsunamis, earthquakes or hurricanes often separate families. This leaves people worrying for their beloved ones, so this is a way for everyone to update their safety status. This will apply to people possibly in the location of the cause. It’ll be based on their latest location, interactions and place of internet connection. When a natural disaster takes place, Facebook will send a notification to you. This notification asks you to state whether you’re safe or not in the affected area.
In a statement regarding the new feature, the creation of the Safety Check was explained:
“Each time, we see people, relief organisations and first responders turn to Facebook in the aftermath of a major natural disaster. These events have taught us a lot about how people use Facebook during disasters and we were personally inspired to continue work on the Disaster Message Board to incorporate what we’ve learned. This project soon became Safety Check.”
This feature was inspired by the earthquake and tsunami that took place in Japan, back in 2011. It will definitely end up being a very helpful addition. In the future, it could possibly expand to more disasters, other than natural ones.
