Given how last year’s Downton Abbey Christmas special ended, you cannot blame us for being a bit apprehensive going into this year’s special. After all, they haven’t killed off a single main character yet this season. Now that the first pictures from the 2013 Christmas special have been released, we can breath a sigh of relief… at least for the moment.

Set in the spring/summer of 1923, almost a year after the end of the recently completed season 4, the special centres around Rose’s (Lily James) debut (or ‘coming out’) at Buckingham Palace followed by her first London season. This means that the majority of the action will take place in and around London.

The recently released photos contain three shots from her debut with her cousin Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) chaperoning.

The other photo in the set is of Shirley MacLaine who returns as Cora’s mother, Martha Levinson.

Along with MacLaine, the Christmas special is filled with high calibre guest stars. Leading these is the highly-anticipated entry of Paul Giamatti as Cora’s playboy brother, Harold, who Lord Grantham spent a significant part of season 4 helping dig out of financial and legal strife back in the States. James Fox also appears as Lord Aysgarth, Guy Williams as King George V and Poppy Drayton, Oliver Dimsdale, Janet Montgomery and Michael Benz round out the cast.

The 2013 Downton Abbey Christmas special airs in the UK on Christmas Day at 8.30pm on ITV.
