Charles Cooper is an attorney who vicariously defended Proposition 8, which had banned same-sex marriage in California. Cooper has revealed that he discovered his daughter Ashley was gay while working on the controversial case. In a change of heart, Cooper is now helping Ashley plan her wedding.

In regards to the reversal of his opinion on gay marriage, Cooper said to journalist Jo Becker in her book Forcing the Spring: Inside the Fight for Marriage Equality, “My views evolve on issues of this kind the same way as other people’s do, and how I view this down the road may not be the way I view it now, or how I viewed it ten years ago.” While still working on preparing his defense for Proposition 8 he and his family plan to attend his daughter’s Massachusetts wedding to her beloved, Casey, this June.

Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, both plaintiffs in the Proposition 8 case, have only kind words to say in reaction to Cooper’s altered stance, saying to detractors that though it may be “jarring” that he is still defending Proposition 8 despite his supporting his daughter, “…in our opinion, loving an LGBT child unequivocally is the single most important thing any parent can do.”

What do you think of Cooper’s sudden shift of views? Is it weird that he’s still choosing to defend Proposition 8, despite supporting his daughter’s gay relationship?
