Is Gary Carr really returning to Downton Abbey? Devoted fans of the series sure hope so!
Gary Carr, who played jazz musician Jack Ross, currently stars in the new BBC One series Death in Paradise, but wouldn’t object to reprising his role in the period piece drama.
Carr told Digital Spy, “[Jack coming back] wasn’t talked about, but at the same time, it’s open.”

So why did Carr’s character Jack leave the show? He departed when the romance between Rose (Lily James) ended after the pair became concerned that society would not approve of their inter-racial relationship (this is the early 1920s).
The 27-year-old actor says that his departure does not necessarily mean an ending. “He does say goodbye at the end of that series, but he does love her so that would be a good reason to come back,” he said. “If I was asked to come back, I wouldn’t say no.”
Since Gary Carr was the first black character on the show he says it was a “big deal for audiences” to see that. “You realize that there were a lot of ignorant people who didn’t know that black people existed in the 1920s – it’s bizarre! You’d never call Downton Abbey an educational piece, but I think that character brought a different layer to the show.”
Would you be happy to see Gary Carr back on Downton Abbey?
Downton Abbey’s fourth season is currently airing in the US and will premiere in Australia after the Australian Open.
