Rihanna is reportedly suing one of the UKs biggest youth fashion retailers.
Topshop, owned by Arcadia Group, has its headquarters in London as well as many other shops around the world, establishing a multinational presence. However, without the consent of Rihanna, the retailer has been selling apparel bearing an image of her. It’s not surprising that the R&B star is suing the company for $5 million.
Sources told the New York Post, that Rihanna and her team tried to negotiate with Topshop owners about the rights to that image, but no agreements were made. $5,000 was apparently offered to the singer, while her team requested for Topshop to stop selling the shirts, a request that was not granted. According to the source, “What is most offensive for Rihanna is that they basically told her, ‘Go to hell. We don’t care; we are going to continue selling you.’”
While UK laws don’t protect the artist, Rihanna still wants to move forward in the case, hiring international law firm Reed Smith. Already spending $1 million, the source claims that at this point she’s doing this out of principle, trying to make a statement, not money.
And not only is she suing the UK retailer, but she recently unveiled a new fashion collaboration with Armani and River Island, one of Topshop’s competitors in the UK. If that’s not a slap in the face, I don’t know what is.
