HBO and Paramount Pictures are reportedly starting development on a prequel series for the film Shutter Island (based on the book of the same name) according to Deadline. Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese, who worked on the psychological thriller, is also in negotiations to return to direct the pilot of the HBO series. The movie, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio, received mainly positive reviews and accumulated nearly $300 million in its box office run.

The series is said to be based on the Ashcliffe mental hospital featured in the film, taking place before the events that transpired in the movie set in 1954 and will delve into the history of the mental institution. Dennis Lehane, author of the Shutter Island novel, is attached to pen the pilot episode.

First instincts have me slightly apprehensive of another asylum based series after the brilliantly executed American Horror Story Asylum, however AHS clearly plays up more than just an institution plot-line. Perhaps a Shutter Island series will prove me wrong and can showcase the inner horrors of ones mind but will hopefully integrate more unexpected twists than the movie managed. Do you think a prequel series is worth the effort?
