Who can believe that for ten years the musical Wicked has been defying gravity on the Great White Way? That’s right, the musical that has “changed [us] for the better” because we have known it is celebrating its tenth anniversary on Broadway and to celebrate Entertainment Weekly has reunited the original stars for a special photo shoot.

The triple-threat duo of Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who were the original Elphaba and Galinda/Glinda, appear together in a stunning black and white shot by Robert Maxwell. And they even have that all important broomstick that enabled Elphaba to escape the Emerald City.

The Stephen Scwartz/Winnie Holzman musical began previews at New York’s Gershwin Theatre on October 8, 2003 following a short pre-Broadway tryout in San Francisco earlier that year. Its official premiere was on October 30. The musical has made its New York home the Gershwin ever since and continues to be one of the hottest tickets both on Broadway and around the world.

Chenoweth stayed with the show until July 2004, when she left to take up the role of Annabeth Schott on The West Wing. Menzel left the Broadway production at the beginning of 2005 to open the show in London. Though both have starred on Fox’s hit dramedy, Glee, they never appeared in the same episode, therefore making this photo shoot even more significant as it’s the first time the duo have been seen together since their Wicked days.
