English actor Idris Elba, best known for his roles on The Wire, BBC’s Luther, and Thor: The Dark World, was hospitalized after having an asthma attack during his flight to South Africa, where he was en route to promote his new film, a Nelson Mandela biopic.

Elba wasn’t in attendance for the press conference, nor the red carpet as the film’s producer (Anant Singh) announced, “Idris is in the hospital after an asthma attack on the plane last night.”

Singh is also “hopeful the star will recover in time for the movie’s premiere on Sunday (November 3),” according to Digital Spy. The premiere will take place in Johannesburg.

The film takes a look at Mandela’s life, from his childhood to becoming the first democratically elected president of South Africa. Playing opposite Elba as Mandela’s wife is Naomie Harris (Skyfall).

Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom will run for a limited time on November 29, and is set to premiere in the UK on January 3, 2014.

Sending prayers and well wishes his way for a quick recovery!
