War Horse star Jeremy Irvine is set to play the leading man in Ronald Emmerich’s historical film, Stonewall.

The film is based on the true story of the iconic police raid at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich village in 1969.

Stonewall Inn, a mafia-owned bar, served as a gathering place for gays and transgenders. The bar was officially raided for liquor licence issues, but it was one of many intrusions on gay and lesbian life. Patrons took to defending their lifestyle by throwing bottles at police, which resulted in days of protest and brought out riot police.

The 1969 riots are widely considered to be the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and modern fight for gay and lesbian rights in the USA.

The movie is set to focus on a young man’s political awakening in the backdrop of those riots.
