It’s been a big week for Jimmy Fallon, and it’s about to get even bigger: The Hollywood Reporter announced that Fallon has closed a deal with NBC, allowing him to inherit the 11:35 PM time-slot which currently belongs to Jay Leno. Leno, of course, is slated to vacate The Tonight Show, as his contract expires in September 2014. NBC has yet to confirm any moving or replacement, and the two late night hosts have taken to their respective shows to joke about the decision over the past few days, gently jabbing NBC’s silence on the matter.
In spite of news of the inevitable succession, it is still unclear as to when Fallon would take over Leno’s position. Theories floating around between sources have speculated that the transition would occur in February, allowing for higher ratings due to the Winter Olympics. No confirmation has been announced, however, on when the move would occur.
The uncertainty (and delay in announcing Fallon as the new host of The Tonight Show) lies in finding a replacement for The Late Show. Sources say that the frontrunner for the 12:35 AM position is Saturday Night Live veteran Seth Meyers and that once a deal closes for Meyers, Leno’s exit will be announced.
