JJ Abrams Mentions the possibility of including a gay character in future Star Wars films, discussing diversity in Hollywood.

JJ Abrams hopes to see the ever-expanding Star Wars universe incorporate a gay character in the near future. During a recent press event, Abrams spoke on the matter stating, “”When I talk about inclusivity it’s not excluding gay characters, it’s about inclusivity so of course.” The director went on to add, “To me the fun of Star Wars is exploring the possibilities, so it seems insanely narrow minded to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”

Abrams won’t actually be writing or directing the next installment (but is on board as a producer) so for now it’s just a hopeful statement that could influence a new character for Episode VIII. For those of you who have seen The Force Awakens (probably the entire world) many felt some occasional romantic subtleties between Poe and Finn – sparking a new found shipper craze. Even Oscar Isaac has previously acknowledged the dynamic, but John Boyega looks at it more as a “bromance.” It would definitely be nice to see something that hasn’t been included in the Star Wars canon, and with Abrams in agreement how can it not happen? Star Wars Episode VIII will be released on December 15th, 2017, so for now it’s back to playing the waiting game Star Wars fans!
