It has been reported that Australian actor Joel Edgerton may play the Pharaoh Ramses, opposite Christian Bale (as Moses) in a Bible melodrama called Exodus

Ridley Scott had offered the character to Javier Bardem whom some of you may known for his performance as Silva in Skyfall, but he kindly passed it off with several other actors. Peter Chernin and Ridley Scott will be directing the film and starts filming in Europe this coming fall. Writers Adam Cooper and Bill Collage drafted the initial script, but then was reworked by Golden Globe winner Steve Zaillian.

For those unfamiliar, Ramses is the inheritor of the Egyptian power whom sooner or later develops into the Egyptian king who also ends up expelling Moses including his companion Israelites.

Scott commented saying that he has had a difficult time believing that Edgerton could play the Egyptian king opposite Bale’s role as Moses. Javier would’ve contrived a more fitting opponent for Moses, although Joel has shown incredible work in the films Warrior and Zero Dark Thirty.

It is very surprising news, but leave it to Scott to make the best casting decisions. Let us hope this wager pays off.

Edgerton’s most recent movie role was in The Great Gatsby in which he played Tom Buchanan and he will start production on Jeff NicholsMidnight Special for Warner Brothers very soon.
