As excited as most Whovians have become about Peter Capaldi being the next Doctor, former companion Karen Gillan seems to be no less confident that the show really needed another Scot! Still, she can’t help but feel a little weird thinking about anyone but Matt Smith playing the Doctor,
“It’s weird that he’s leaving, because to me he is the Doctor and he always will be,” she told PA. “But I’m biased, I guess! I think Peter Capaldi is an amazing choice and a really cool direction to take the character – he’s older, he’s different to Matt and he’s Scottish!”
Let’s face it; the show needed another Scot after David Tennant, John Barrowman, and Karen Gillan all left!
She later added that, “A lot of people associate [Capaldi] with Malcolm Tucker (The Thick of It) who’s very grumpy, but that could work for the Doctor.”
In the same interview, Gillan also spoke about herself for a bit, particularly about how she is secretly a true sci-fi geek herself:
“I never ever considered myself a sci-fi geek, but the more I talk about it with people I’ve worked with… I think I am! My mum watched Star Trek a lot and I watched it growing up so I know a lot about it. I worked with Kate Mulgrew recently, she played Captain Kathryn Janeway, the only female captain on Voyager, and I was so starstruck – that was when I realised I am actually a nerd.
“I went to the dubbing of one of the Star Trek films and I went to listen to the music being recorded by the orchestra, it was the coolest thing ever! OK, yes, I’m definitely a nerd!”
Gillan, who shaved her head a few months ago for the film Guardians of the Galaxy (to be released on the first of August, 2014), can be seen on the big screen right now in the Scottish rom-com Not Another Happy Ending.
