Katy Perry has been named the first judge in the reboot of American Idol, the hit series that wrapped up in 2016.

American Idol is making a triumphant return to television with a well-known songstress at the helm. Katy Perry has recently been named as the first judge for the reboot.

It is unknown when the next two judges will be announced or when production will begin on the new series, which will continue the legacy of the original program that ended its 15 year run on Fox in 2016. The series was the launching point for the careers of big names, including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Katharine McPhee, Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry.

“I am honored and thrilled to be the first judge bringing back the American Idol tradition of making dreams come true for incredible talents with authentic personalities and real stories,” said Perry on her new role. “I’m always listening to new music, and love discovering diamonds in the rough, from mentoring young artists on my label, or highlighting new artists on my tours, I want to bring it back to the music.”

The reboot, which will be produced by FremantleMedia North America and 19 Entertainment, will be distributed worldwide on ABC.

“We are thrilled to be ushering in this new era of American Idol with Katy leading the charge. Her incredible accolades speak for themselves,” said ABC’s Channing Dungey. “We are so lucky to have this strong and talented woman help inspire and guide the next crop of artists as they pursue their dreams.”

Katy Perry has 12 Grammy nominations, 5 American Music Awards, 14 People’s Choice Awards, 4 Guinness World Records, and an Emmy nomination. Her 2008 debut singles “I Kissed A Girl” and “Hot n Cold” made her a bestselling female artist.
